Icon Experiment Now Ready to Begin!

Published by on June 2nd 2011.

Hello Everybody!

I am now starting the icon experiment! Remember, this is not a contest. All submissions that follow the rules below are accepted. The quality of all art is relative to the artist. We are looking for your best work of course, but nobody should feel that their art isn't good enough to be in the set because they aren't as good as someone else.

What we will all be making:
A smiley face emoticon. It is relatively simple idea, but there is a lot of room for personal design and such.

The rules:

1. You must use the RealWorld Software to build the icon. It does not necessarily have to be RealWorld Icon Editor, but that is the tool specifically made for creating them. If you do not have the icon editor, it is available for a 30 day trial period, and if you submit a high quality, 20 icon set to the gallery, you can get it for free!

2. You must upload it under the "Released to public domain" license. Anybody should be free to use your icon for any legal purpose.

3. It must be a smiley face. No frowny faces, sick faces, mad faces, etc. Any emoticon other than a smile will not be accepted.

4. Both eyes must be open- no winking or sleeping.

5. Props such as eyeglasses, sunglasses, hats, flowers, etc. should not be used, as these are recognized as other emoticon designs other than the smiley.

6. You may use the "big smile" if you wish. However, you should not use the "smirk" or "grin" and the "regular smile" is preferred.

7. Colors should not be too absurd. Yellows and oranges work best.

8. You should name the icon "Yourusername-Smiley." For example, mine will be called JDDellGuy-Smiley.

9. All submissions are due in two weeks. This will be Friday, June 17, 2011.

10. It is preferred that you include all icon standard icon sizes, but only the 256*256 image is required for submission. Even if you simply create all the other sizes from the 256*256 icon, that's okay, but individually created icons are better quality usually. The standard sizes are 256*256, 48*48, 32*32, 24*24, and 16*16. You do not need to include the 256 color and 16 color images, the smooth edges images are all that are necessary.

When you have created your icon and uploaded it, send the link for it to Vlasta so that he can assemble the set.

Any questions, let me know in the comments below! Looking forward to your artistry!

Can I submit a icon like the ones I made in my smiley set?

user icon JDDellGuy contributing user on June 5th 2011

You sure can! It should have at least the 256*256 size though. So even if you just make a small emoticon, make it in at least the large size too. Can't wait to see what yours looks like!

Find your icon in the junkyard, copy the URL, and PM that to him.
