How to make custom Folder icons! (Tutorial)

Published by on December 8th 2020.

Do you want to make some custom Folder icons that will display as an image of your folder? Well you came to the right place! I will show you how you can assign custom icons to a folder!

You will need:

  • RealWorld Icon Editor - You can get it from the "Software" page!
  • A folder - You can create a new folder to test it out!
  • And a great idea...

Now that you got these things, it's time to make the custom icon! You just need to follow these steps:

1. Download the software RealWorld Icon Editor from the Software page.
2. Open the software.
3. Click on the Create option from the left sidebar.
4. Click the New Icon button.
5. Click on Create or double-click the New Icon button.
6. Now you have opened the editor. You will need to draw the small version of your icon.
7. When you are complete, click on the 32x32 pixels button from the left sidebar.
8. Select all of your 16x16 pixel version of your icon. Hit Ctrl+C on your keyboard.
9. Click on the line icon on the top bar and select No Smoothing
10. Now you need to resize your icon to fit in the 32x32 space.
11. Do that for all the icons. For the 48x48 icon do the same, but this time select the 32x32 icon.
12. Now you are done! Save your icon.
13. Now go to your folder, right-click in the place for files in your folder and select Properties from the list.
14. Go to the Customise tab and click the button Change Icon...
15. Click Browse... and select your ico. file.
16. If it shows the icon in the list, then you done it correctly. You can now click Ok.
17. Then click in the Properties window the button Apply and then Ok.
18. Now you are done with changing the icon! Enjoy :-)

Notice
You need to make the icon for all the types, for 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48, because then it wouldn't show on the desktop.
