I'm not understanding how to use the line tool correctly, I just needed help on this. Maybe I should use the tutorial instead.

You press and hold the mouse button, move the mouse from the starting point to the end point and release the button. Then the control handles appear and you can add more points by dragging them or adjust the endpoints. If you drag a handle in the middle of a line section, it will add a new point. In the tool config, you can also close the line to connect then endpoints.
